A conifer row planted as a screen often becomes the reason the patio is dark. Mr Arlington’s garden in Potters Bar is that photograph: the conifers were cut back, the fence panels replaced, and a feature patio set out once the light was back.
Cutting back and taking the row out are different jobs. A reduction can leave the boundary and the privacy. Felling leaves a stump, a fence line, and a neighbour who can now see in. The specification says which one is being booked.
Before anyone climbs
The arborists hold current certificates, and the work is written down first: what comes off, what stays, and where the timber goes. Health and safety is the opening item, not a note at the end.
A tree preservation order, or a tree in a conservation area, needs the local planning authority before felling or a heavy reduction. Hertsmere covers Elstree, Borehamwood, Bushey, Potters Bar, Radlett and Shenley. St Albans, Welwyn Hatfield, Dacorum, East Herts and Stevenage each have their own tree officer. Watford Borough Council covers the borough.
Nesting season matters. Work that can wait until the leaves are off should wait. A limb failing over a path should not.
If the conifers are coming down so a patio can run through the line, stump removal is its own visit. Leaving the stump and paving up to it is how the slabs lift later.
